Though I feel like people have posted with them just firing them off with no flare gun. You can fire the 1x2 slot flare from you tac rig when you assign it to a key bind. The 1x1 flare needs the flare gun.

If you look straigth up, you will shoot the flare behind you. Aim like 60 degrees towards the extract and you should be good to go.
